I haven't actually worn this in the water yet, but since it's a Speedo, I'm not worried -- I've been wearing Speedos for probably close to two decades now, from playing at the beach as a preschooler, to swimming competitively in my early teens, to SCUBA diving as a young adult, and have only ever replaced them because I outgrew them. I recently started diving, and since putting on a wet swim suit is no fun, especially on a cold morning, and as anyone who's ever worn a life vest is probably well aware, the exposed skin with a bikini top is less than ideal under a BC (an essential piece of diving equipment, which fits a lot like a life vest), and since the only one-piece I had was the Speedo I've had since middle school, some 9 years ago (which is still in perfect condition despite years of use ranging from frequent swim practices to salt water and sand at the beach, being left to dry countless times without having the chlorine, salt, sand, etc. rinsed out, stuffed in a plastic bag and left in a suitcase for days while still wet, and whatever else I may have done to it), I thought it might be time for another suit or two. I find one-piece suits really annoying though, so I was thrilled to find something that actually covered everything I needed it too without all the hassle of putting on and taking off a one-piece.
I will say that the fit isn't quite as forgiving as a one-piece suit. I bought this suit for myself (I'm 23), and although a girl's 16 is supposedly equivalent to a girls/women's racing 34, it was clear from the size chart that the proportions were different (shorter torso, larger hips and waist), so I didn't expect it would fit quite perfectly. As it turns out, the one-piece suit I bought does fit the same as a women's 34, since it stretches enough that the extra fabric from the waist/hips makes up for the height different. The two piece doesn't do that though, and the result is that there's a smallish gap (maybe an inch or two) between the top and bottom pieces, and the lower portion of the top is looser than I would like and is unlikely to stay in place in the water. However, the bottoms are definitely not going anywhere, and the top isn't going to ride up any further than the bottom of my rib cage in the water, so there's definitely no danger that it will come anywhere close to revealing any private parts, and since I'm 5'5", and by everything but height am usually closer to a girl's 12-14 than a 16, I would guess that for most kids there wouldn't be any space between the top and bottom pieces and the top wouldn't ride up noticeably at all.
I do recommend checking the size chart on the Speedo website before buying a suit online if you don't already have a Speedo suit you know fits properly, since the they give really precise measurements, and seem to be significantly different than many brands (for instance, I have two-piece swimsuits from Limited Too that are 14s, and other clothes from there that are 12s and still fit me perfectly, and their 16 would fall right off me; and in women's dress sizes, I can rarely even wear a 2 but according to Speedo's size chart I'd wear an 8, although since their adult swimsuits were mostly out of my price range, I don't know for sure that that's as accurate as their girl's and women's racing measurements).
